This webpage was created for a volcanology class at the University of Idaho. Included is a comprehensive description of several aspects regarding the study of volcanology.
The Mayon volcano is the most active volcano in the Philippines. It is considered to be the most perfect stratovolcano (cone-shaped) because it is nearly circular in circumference and reaches a point at the top while maintaining a 35-40 degree slope all around the summit. Mayon is approximately 2,462m in height and 20km in diameter- covering 314 square km (in other words, 14% of the province it sits in).
"The mythology says that there once lived a man named Magayon who had an extremely beautiful princess for a niece. Being the jealous type, he was so possessive of this poor girl that no man dreamed of approaching her for fear of provoking the uncle's rage. Eventually, of course, a strong-willed and brave suitor was driven to climb up through the window of her chamber and convinced the princess to run away with him and live happily ever after. Uncle Magayon was predictably unimpressed and the pair asked the gods to help them. Suddenly a violent landslide came down and buried the angry Magayon, freeing the couple from his wrath. His ferocity was so strong, it lingers to this day - locals say it's Magayon's anger that makes Mount Mayon periodically explode with ash, lava and gas."
