Like many other volcanoes, Mayon can be destructive, but it is also productive.
Albay is a rich agricultural region with the bulk of its population surrounding the volcano. The region has fertile slopes and plains which border the volcano. Some of the crops grown in Albay include abaca, coconut, palay, and vegitables.
Even though it is dangerous for the villagers to live near the volcano, farmers flourish.
There are also many recreational activities provided by Mayon. Climbers engage the mountain in the summer months, tourists are brought in by the ruins of Cagsawa (a sunken church caused by the eruption of Mayon in the 1814), the Hayop-hayupan caves, the hot springs of Tiwi, and beautiful dive sites in undisturbed coral reefs on the west side of Albay.
